COSMETIC AND STANDARD DENTURE RELINE, REBASE, REPAIR, TISSUE CONDITIONING
It is our goal as DENTURE SPECIALISTS to design and fabricate dentures that fit very well. Most of the time we are very successful due to the fact that new denture fit/conform to the shape of the mouth PERFECTLY AT FIRST.
It is a dental fact that the shape of the gums changes under the denture from the very moment dentures are being worn. Bone ridges, aka gums, get smaller and smaller. However, hard plastic of the denture does not change. After about two years, the difference between the shape of the denture and the shape of the mouth becomes very noticeable. Denture becomes very loose. It may dislodge from the mouth at any time, particularly during eating, laughing, coughing.
In an effort to compensate for this inevitable bone loss and restore the retentive quality of the denture, a procedure such as RELINE OF THE DENTURE IS ALWAYS PRESCRIBED.
During this procedure, the Denture Specialist takes an impression of the bone ridge inside of the old denture. The exact reproduction of the mouth of NOW is recorded. The Denture Reline is going to be fitted to that exact reproduction. There will be an intimate contact between the gums and the denture. As a result, a good fit of the denture is attained. Under certain conditions, this procedure may be performed “at the chairside”. Usually it takes about 1 hour.
This procedure is identical to the “hard reline” described above. The only difference is the material used to reline a denture. In this instance, the material is soft and it remains relatively soft for up to two years. Usually, the SOFT RELINE is prescribed to patients with very flat, flabby ridges which are constantly sore under the hard denture acrylic resin. In majority of situations, the soft denture reline is the treatment of choice when patients cannot wear a regular hard acrylic resin denture because of the constant soreness.
It is the same clinical procedure as the reline. However, the difference is that ALL acrylic resin (not just the inside of the denture) is REPLACED. The only parts of the denture that are kept are TEETH. Usually, this procedure is prescribed when the denture base (pink acrylic resin) is very old, heavily stained, or cracked beyond repair. This is a denture makeup. It is NOT a new denture, but it is a revitalized version of the it. This procedure cannot be done in 1 hour. It normally takes up to 2 days.
TEMPORARY RELINE – TISSUE CONDITIONING
When gums are painful, red, swollen and sensitive to touch, the Denturist will place a TISSUE CONDITIONING material inside the denture. As a result, the denture can be worn without much of the discomfort because the material that is used to bring swollen gums to a healthy state is soft and medicated. It usually stays soft up to 4 weeks. Customary, this temporary denture reline is done before any permanent reline (hard or soft) is prescribed. Otherwise, if the permanent reline or a new denture is fabricated based on the impression of the swollen gums, the final result will not be an exact reproduction of the bone ridges, Consequently, the final denture will not fit well.
Dentures do not last forever. Usually they become loose after 2-5 years. As a result of their poor fit, dentures rock in the mouth. This constant flexing under patient’s load of chewing causes dentures to break. If the denture has porcelain teeth they break off the denture as a result of this flexing.
When you denture or tooth breaks, it can be professionally repaired by an expert within 1 hour. We have the equipment and the expertise to do it correctly and fast.
Home made repairs never work and here are the reasons NOT TO DO THAT:
DO NOT REPAIR YOUR DENTURE WITH GLUE BECAUSE:
While this may be a quick fix, using any kind of glue for denture repairs is poisonous. After the fixed by glue denture is placed in the mouth, tiny fragments of the glue loosen from being exposed to the hostile moist environment in the mouth. The constant rubbing of foods while eating and the movement of the tongue help the glue wear down. Consequently, the glue is absorbed with foods into a digestive system. The end result is a broken denture with fragments of dried glue on it and a poisoned digestive system.
Some glues contain violent solvents and will melt the acrylic resin around the edges. As a result, the denture will become distorted. This distortion will render the denture unwearable.
Other Super glues are water soluble, therefore the repair is NOT GOING TO LAST.
THE BEST THING TO DO WHEN YOUR DENTURE BREAKS IS TO TAKE IT TO A DENTURE SPECIALIST. MOST OF THE REPAIRS OF BROKEN DENTURES OR BROKEN OFF DENTURE TEETH ARE DONE WITHIN 1 HOUR.
