COSMETIC DENTURE STABILIZATION WITH DENTAL IMPLANTS

While every effort is made to make a good and functional denture, it is sometimes hard to achieve a stable lower and retentive upper denture. This is mainly due to the jaw bone constantly shrinking with age, smoking, or some systemic diseases such as diabetes or even chewing pressure on the existing denture. However, there are new advances in making dentures.  One such advance is an implant-supported or implant-retained denture. Both types offer an the stability of the cosmetic denture.  This kind of dental appliance requires the placement of implants in your mouth by an implant surgeon before making the denture.Dental implants are used to replace one or more missing teeth in your mouth. Implants are made of titanium or similar materials that are well suited to the human body. They are artificial replacements for teeth roots that support a restoration or a dental appliance.

Implant Treatment To Support/Retain Cosmetic Dentures

It normally takes a few phases and several months for your denturist to complete the treatment. In the first phase, your implant dental surgeon will place the implants in your jaw bone. It requires 3-6 months for the bone to fuse to the implants.

In the 2nd phase, your denurist will place an extension or a post to extend the implants above the gum this process can also be performed during the first phase depending on the technique chosen by your implant surgeon.

After your gums are healed, it is time for an impression to be made and a final restoration or appliance to be fabricated by the denturist. In most cases, on your final visit, the restoration or the dental appliance is placed and adjusted to insure proper fit and function.

Dental Implant Risks & Complications

While every effort is made to place a successful and functional implant, it is not uncommon for implants to fail. This is mainly due to lack of proper attachment between the implant and the jaw bone during the bone fusing phase.

Other problems such as:

  • Breakage of the implants
  • Breakage or loosening of its restoration or dental appliance
  • Infection of the surrounding gums also rare possibilities.

Finally, due to differences in the shapes of the jaws and the bone density, the back area of upper jaw may require an additional procedure such as “sinus lifting” to increase its predictability and long term success.

Another type of dental implants are Mini implants. They are considerably smaller than standard tooth implants, so the dental implant surgery is less invasive, takes less time, and heals faster.

After your implants have been attached to your jaw bone, you will often be given a provisional denture to immediately wear over their implants. Once the implants have healed, a permanent cosmetic denture can be fabricated, or the patient’s existing denture can be retrofitted to accommodate the denture implants. The removable cosmetic denture will snap on to the implants to provide added support, stability and retention. The cost of a cosmetic denture supported/ retained by implants is from $1795.00.

As Denturists we love being able to offer dental implant therapy. In this clinic we have done 94 lower dentures supported by standard dental implants and 117 lower dentures retained by mini-dental implants. I feel these overdentures are among the best treatments I have provided for my patients in over 30 years of practice.

Dental authorities agree that “in the correct situation and understanding how to use them, dental implants they are a wonderful long-term solution.”
As with regular dental implant surgery, the patient will need to have X-rays and possibly bone scans taken to make sure there is enough bone to support the implants.
